How about broom stick fights?
Two opponents stand on beer bottles (sideways under the shoes), and attempt to swipe the other man’s stick away and cause him to fall into the slurry left after the second beer bottle broke in the bottle walking contest, which was attempted an hour after the singing stopped and the third barrel was emptying at an alarming rate.
I didn’t know that the results of duels were actually published in the national press! And honour could be achieved by both parties actually turning up, but not having to do very much, once their differences had been aired and it was obvious that neither one wanted to die from the shot. The main danger was infection from the bullet/sword picking up dirt and germs from the filthy coats they wore, the split second before the body was punctured.
