Steve Edge World - Quintessentially Adventurous

Imagine stalking an Indian river for the fish made legendary by Rudyard Kipling’s poem, The Golden Mahseer. What about being sworn in as Honorary Eagle Dancer by a native American Indian tribe? Ever been run over by an iceburg? Steve Edge has.

Design and branding guru to big names such as Christian Dior and Fortnum and Mason, Edge is also your classic eccentric adventurer. Think Raiders of the Lost Ark – his legs and his pet monkey even appeared in the actual film. He’s been ‘knighted’ by a Maharaja and thrown from a thouroughbred racehorse. Now this indefatigable character, who has a passion for movies that stems from working with George Lucas on the Raiders trilogy and Star Wars, is presenting an exhibition of Polaroid film scans (www.steve-edge.com for details).

The scan is a simple process: a camera captures frames from a classic movie. It is the way that Edge manipulates it that transforms it into something intriguing. ‘I wanted to capture the spirit of film in a form that could be appreciated instantly,’ he says. ‘But a single image can’t purvey the true essence, the emotion’

Instead, Edge photographed multiple frames at set intervals and displayed them horizontally in running order against a wall. ‘You absorb them instantaneously,’ he says. ‘The effect is like a condensed hyper-real movie experience.’ These are to be exhibited in London and Paris in the near future. But don’t count on Edge being there. He may be tucked away in his log cabin retreat or abseiling from a helicopter into the Russian hinterlands to fish for giant salmon. By Will Jones.
